Refase Circuit Protection

The scope of this project is to conduct a series of tests, including field trials, to benchmark the performance of the Refase system against existing protection methods. An evaluation will establish if the Refase system is a viable solution to the problem statement detailed within the PEA document.

Objectives

The objectives of the project are:

To have fully tested and undertaken a FAT at Synaptec's laboratory.
To have completed a SAT at Braco R&D substation and approved Refase for use in live trials.
To install Refase on a live 132kV circuit and benchmark the performance against existing protection methods.
To have gained an understanding of the system’s suitability for business as usual adoption including a comprehensive business case and benefits realisation plan

Learnings

Outcomes

A summary report has been produced detailing the findings of the Refase project. Several other technical reports have been created detailing the system performance of Refase. As a result of the project the Technical Readiness Level (TRL) of the Refase has increased from TRL 6 to TRL8 and upon completion of compliance with SHE Transmission’s General Requirements for Protection IED’s document will be suitable for use in BAU.

Several dissemination activities including internal and external dissemination events have been planned to share knowledge with other interested parties.

Lessons Learnt

The project learning has shown that the Refase system does perform as required and is suitable for use in live network trials. Synaptec will continue progressing the required certifications for the Refase product to be used in business-as-usual applications. SHE
Transmission will continue to monitor the performance of Refase until the required certifications have been completed. Once the certifications have been completed the Refase system could be deemed suitable for business-as-usual application, the scale of deployment is dependent on the protection and control requirements for each circuit.

No significant problems with the trialled methods or equipment were encountered during the testing and trials to date.
