The project primarily covers LV network impact, from design, operational and power quality perspectives.

An assessment of the network impact of V2G as successively increasing numbers are rolled out in a phased implementation will be undertaken.

The project will assess and quantify this impact and make any recommendations to mitigate, or otherwise, resulting from the widespread use of this technology.

An assessment of likely customer behavior will also be undertaken. this may provide an indication of the likely speeed iof take-up of this technology as well as other network relevant insights.

Benefits

The project is research/knowledge development through a design, install, assess, mitigate and disseminate project.

The project will produce a design assessment process and associated design guidance for V2G connections. It will also produce guidance on where and how V2G may be used to mitigate network issues.

Delivery of the objectives detailed above, or an analysis of why they are not important will determine project success.

Outcomes

The TRL of the Method has not changed as a result of the project findings. The challenges encountered during the project have demonstrated that the true TRL of the technology was lower at the outset than was understood.

Lessons Learnt

A key issue in this project has been the market readiness of V2G chargers. These were not ready in sufficient volume from the market at the outset. The ability of, and the time required for the market to bring these devices forward was taken at face value at the design stage and this heavily impacted project delivery.

Market maturity issues need to be better considered where they impact a project's critical path and a more sceptical view taken during the project design phase.

Also, where early adoption of a new technology is considered, the uptake of such new propositions is difficult to predict. As part of the e4Future consortium, it was anticipated that we would be able to deploy network monitoring at a number of fleet sites within the Northern Powergrid region. Challenges with recruitment, the pandemic and the hardware, resulted in a lower than anticipated number of participants on the project as a whole.
