ESB Networks
We keep the Nation Humming!
ESB Networks is the Distribution System Operator and Asset Owner of both the Distribution and Transmission Networks in the Republic of Ireland, serving 2.4m electricity customers in a safe and efficient manner, every day, every hour and every minute.
The electricity distribution network includes over 640 HV Substations, all distribution stations, 150,000 overhead electricity lines, 2.2m poles and 23,000km underground cables that are used to bring power to Ireland's 2.4 million domestic, commercial and industrial customers.
We facilitate the competitive electricity market. As meter operator, we install, maintain and read the meters of 2.4 million electricity customers up to four times annually and provide this information to suppliers, and are currently rolling out SmartMeters to all customers.
The distribution system is being adapted as part of the drive towards a lower carbon energy future, in line with Ireland’s commitment to meet 70% of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2030. The total capacity of wind farms connected is currently (end 2020) 4.75GW.
Electricity North West Limited
Electricity North West owns, operates and maintains the North West’s electricity distribution network, connecting 2.4 million properties, and more than 5 million people in the region to the National Grid.
We own one of the original 14 regulated electricity distribution networks in England, Wales and Scotland and are regulated by Ofgem - the Office of the gas and electricity markets.
Our network covers a diverse range of terrain, from isolated farms in rural areas such as Cumbria, to areas of heavy industry and urban populations including Manchester.
National Energy System Operator
National Grid are an international electricity and gas company based in the UK and northeastern US. We play a vital role in connecting millions of people safely, reliably and efficiently to the energy they use.
National Grid Electricity has two roles in the United Kingdom:
Electricity transmission owner
We own the electricity transmission system in England and Wales. Our electricity assets comprise approximately 7,200 kilometres of overhead line, about 690 kilometres of underground cable and 337 substations at 241 sites.
Electricity system operator
We are the Great Britain System Operator, responsible for managing the operations of both the England and Wales transmission system that we own and also the two high voltage electricity transmission networks in Scotland. Day-to-day operation of the Great Britain electricity transmission system involves the continuous real-time matching of demand and generation output, ensuring the stability and security of the power system and the maintenance of satisfactory voltage and frequency. We are also designated as system operator for the new offshore electricity transmission regime.
National Grid Electricity Distribution
National Grid Electricity Distribution is the regional electricity distribution division of National Grid. Formerly known as Western Power Distribution, the UK’s largest electricity distribution network serves nearly 8 million customers in the East and West Midlands, South West and Wales, delivering essential power to millions of homes and businesses across its regions.

National Grid Gas Distribution
National Grid are an international electricity and gas company based in the UK and northeastern US. We play a vital role in connecting millions of people safely, reliably and efficiently to the energy they use.
In the UK, gas leaves the transmission system and enters the distribution networks at high pressure. It is then transported through a number of reducing pressure tiers until it is finally delivered to consumers. There are eight regional distribution networks, four of which are owned by National Grid. Our UK distribution networks deliver gas to around 10.9 million consumers.
National Gas Transmission PLC
National Gas Transmission is the backbone of Britain's energy system today and will play a leading role in the transition to a clean energy future that works for every home and business. We own and operate the national gas network, delivering energy to where it is needed in every part of the country.
Our network incorporates 7,600km of high-pressure pipelines, eight connected distribution networks and more than 500 above-ground installations.
We keep households warm and underpin their quality of life. For business, we fuel growth and innovation, and we are looking to the future by developing the hydrogen transmission system of tomorrow.
Northern Gas Networks
Since we started operating in 2005, we’ve been leading the way as one of the most cost-efficient of the UK’s eight gas distribution networks. We deliver great value for money to our customers, as well as a whole host of social and economic benefits to our region. We’re recognised as a dynamic, passionate, conscious and people-focused team that safely and reliably delivers gas to over 2.7 million homes and businesses across the North East, northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire. Although we don’t source the gas, fix boilers and appliances, or get involved with plumbing, we work with those that do to deliver it through a vast network of underground pipes that are constantly being invested in and upgraded. It’s more complicated than it sounds so we’re always exploring cutting-edge thinking, revolutionary engineering practices and world-class science to find new ways to provide sustainable sources of energy. And while our customers may not see us very often, they can sleep soundly knowing that we’re working around the clock to keep them connected and make sure they stay safe.
