Learnings

Outcomes

All deliverables for the project have been met. Several reports have been completed for this project; however, they are not suitable for inclusion within this closedown report, due to their size and format. These reports can be made available to relevant network licensees. A summary of the reports are highlighted below –

• Report of the probabilistic planning process methodology for the connection studies which covers the learnings from existing projects, key requirements, high-level processes, and core techniques for modelling.
• A design report summarising all research undertaken, design decision made and the detailed documentation of all models, tools and functionalities developed.
• A case study report which summarises the models designed, assumptions used, the comparisons of results and final recommendations following the probabilistic and deterministic approaches.
• The prototype DIgSILENT PowerFactory toolkit for batch load flow simulations that uses sampled data and performs economic redispatch for constraint management.

Lessons Learnt

The project was extended by 5 months as the team were delayed in accessing the required software to model data sets as well as poor data quality impacting the deliverables and caused delays to project completion. The key lessons learned through this project include –

• Establish and ensure ways of working are agreed and followed following project kick-off. 
• For such a complex project, detailed technical discussions throughout the project would result in the most efficient development and testing of code. Specific details of the requirements of the toolkit become clearer as the project develops, and keeping a close watch on these as they are refined is key.
• Ensuring visibility and version control details for the changes made to the toolkit.
• Clear, defined resource from project kick-off with understanding of project requirements. Notice of resource changes well in advance through weekly update meetings highlighted as an agenda point.
