Outcomes

The project has developed a proposed scope for the Virtual Energy System Common Framework and a series of prioritised recommendations of how to implement it.  The learnings from this have been taken forward into the Virtual Energy System SIF Discovery phase.

The project has published five reports which are available on nationalgrideso.com and the Smarter Networks Portal, the learning from which will be taken into the development of the Common Framework for the Virtual Energy System.

Benchmarking: Evaluating global cross sector best practice in data sharing and digital twins.

Key Factors: Defining the scope of the common framework and establishing an initial prioritisation.

Review of Data Standards and Data Portals: A review of existing standards to identify the potential gaps that will need to be solved in future phases.  A review of the data portals that exist across energy and energy related organisations, this includes a consideration of the requirements from a data portal. The report also examines data licensing requirements.

Programme Governance: Proposing structures needed to properly govern a cross sector programme.  This includes the steering and advisory group structures and scope.

Demonstrator Use Case definition: Proposing a simplified use case to develop an initial implementation of data sharing for digital twins in networks.  This will test the 6 priority key factors and follow in a later project.

Lessons Learnt

The conclusions from the Benchmarking and Key Factors reports are applicable to future projects both within Virtual Energy System and for projects seeking to use best practice in establishing data or model exchange processes.

The project has also included a review of available data standards in energy and the requirements for data portals.  The learning from this is available in the Review of Data Standards and Data Portals report.
